Why Your Car Wash Float Valve Keeps Sticking Open — and How to Fix It for Good

Ask around a car wash forum long enough and you'll find the same complaint: a float valve that worked fine for months suddenly starts sticking open, flooding a reclaim pit or overflowing a rinse tank. The usual suspects get blamed — a bad float, mineral buildup, a worn seal. Sometimes that's it. But a lot of the time, the real problem is simpler and easier to miss: the valve was never rated for the water temperature it's sitting in.

Heat Does More Than Warm the Water

Hot water rinse cycles, reclaim systems, and boiler-fed wash bays routinely run water well above what a standard float valve was designed to handle. Heat softens seals, warps plastic components, and changes how tightly a valve can close — and a valve that can't fully close is a valve that sticks open. The failure looks mechanical, but the root cause is thermal: the wrong valve running consistently hot.

Know Your Valve's Actual Temperature Rating

Jobe's float valve lines aren't interchangeable when it comes to heat, and the difference matters more than most spec sheets make obvious:

  • Standard Topaz: rated up to 140°F (60°C) — fine for cold and warm-water applications, not built for sustained hot-water duty.
  • Topaz Industro: rated up to 176°F (80°C) — the only standard-order Topaz model built specifically for hot water and industrial duty, which makes it the default choice for most car wash and truck wash bays.
  • Topaz Differential: can handle higher-temperature service, but only with a special high-temperature order — it isn't rated for it out of the box, so ordering the standard configuration for a hot-water application is a common and avoidable mistake.

If your wash bay is pulling reclaim water or rinse water at anything approaching hot-tap temperatures, running a standard Topaz is very likely the reason a valve that used to work now doesn't.

The Fix Is Usually a Swap, Not a Repair

When a valve is sticking open from heat damage, replacing worn parts on the same valve model just resets the clock on the same failure. The seals and components will soften again under the same water temperature that damaged them the first time. The actual fix is matching the valve to the water it's actually seeing — which for most hot-water wash bays means moving to Topaz Industro, or placing a special high-temp order on the Differential if your system calls for it.

Before You Order

Check the actual water temperature at the valve, not just the boiler setpoint — mixing, distance from the heat source, and seasonal ambient temperature can all shift what the valve experiences day to day. If you're running anywhere near or above 140°F consistently, size up to Industro before the next failure, not after.
