Rainwater harvesting is the practice of collecting and storing rain — usually off a roof, into a tank or cistern — instead of letting it run off into storm drains. Done right, it cuts mains water use for irrigation, livestock, and non-potable household needs, reduces runoff and erosion, and gives you a backup supply during water restrictions or outages. Done wrong, it's just a tank that fills with mains water anyway, because nothing was designed to leave room for the rain.
The Problem a Standard Float Valve Creates
A normal float valve does exactly what you'd expect: keeps the tank as full as possible, all the time. On a rainwater tank, that's actually counterproductive. If the valve tops the tank off with mains water every time the level dips slightly, there's no capacity left when it actually rains — the rainwater just overflows and washes away instead of getting captured. You end up paying for mains water in a system that was supposed to reduce mains water use.
