Livestock Are Hard on Trough Valves — Here's the Fix
When a trough valve fails, the usual suspects get the blame — a worn seal, mineral scale, hard water, age. Rarely does anyone blame the 1,200-pound animal that's been nosing, chewing, or stepping on the valve every time it comes to drink. But an exposed float valve sitting at the edge of a trough is directly in the path of the same animals it's supplying water to, and horses, cattle, and deer are curious, physical, and not gentle with unfamiliar hardware.
Why Exposed Valves Take the Hit
A float valve mounted on the outside wall of a trough or tank has no protection from anything but the elements — and livestock don't distinguish between a fence post and a valve assembly. Horses mouth and chew on protruding hardware out of curiosity. Cattle rub against anything at the right height for an itch. A valve that gets knocked, chewed, or leaned on repeatedly eventually cracks, loosens, or stops sealing — not because the valve was defective, but because it was never protected from the one thing guaranteed to be nearby: the animals drinking from it.
What a Mount and Cover Actually Solves
The Jobe Protect-A-Mount is built specifically for this failure mode — a clamp-and-cover system that mounts a Rojo or Topaz valve to the tank wall and physically shields it from impact, rather than leaving it hanging exposed. It attaches tool-free to plastic, metal, or concrete tank walls up to about 3" thick, using a three-point locking system that holds the valve firmly in place even under the kind of repeated contact that would eventually work a bare valve loose.
How It Actually Mounts
The valve seats directly into the Protect-A-Mount bracket first, then a 90-degree elbow — included with every Protect-A-Mount — attaches to route the outlet into the tank. That sequence is why the valve has to be the long detach tail version: a short tail simply doesn't reach far enough into the bracket to connect properly. If you're ordering a Topaz to pair with this mount, make sure it's the long tail option.
The Air Break Is the Other Half of the Job
Physical protection isn't the only thing a mount like this needs to get right. The Protect-A-Mount positions the valve with a fixed 50mm (about 2") air break above the water line — a gap that exists specifically to prevent back-siphoning. Without that gap, trough water could theoretically be drawn backward into the supply line under the right pressure conditions, a real water-quality and compliance concern in agricultural water systems. Mounting the valve correctly isn't just about keeping it from getting knocked around; it's what keeps the water supply itself protected in both directions.
A Secondary Benefit: Some Insulation
The cover isn't a substitute for dedicated freeze protection — that's a job for something like Frost Pro, which keeps water moving through the valve so it doesn't sit still and freeze. But a physical cover does add a layer of insulation against wind and direct cold exposure, which can meaningfully reduce how hard a valve gets hit by the coldest snaps of the season.
What It Doesn't Do
Worth being direct about the limits: Protect-A-Mount is built for 3/4" Rojo and Topaz valves specifically — it isn't compatible with Megaflow or Vortex, and it doesn't fit 1" or 1.25" inlet sizes. It only works with the long detach tail on Topaz valves, for the mounting reason above. It's sold on its own, with the valve itself sold separately (the 90-degree elbow is included). And the 2" air break is a fixed dimension; there's no adjusting it for a specific tank setup. If your system runs Megaflow or Vortex, needs a larger inlet size, or your tank walls run thicker than about 3", this particular mount isn't going to be the fix — that's worth confirming before ordering rather than after.
The Real Math
A Protect-A-Mount runs $85.99. A replacement Topaz or Rojo valve, plus the labor and downtime of an empty trough while it gets swapped, costs more than that — and if the original failure was from livestock contact rather than normal wear, an unprotected replacement is just as exposed as the one it replaced. For pasture and yard installations where animals have direct access to the valve, the mount isn't an accessory so much as a piece of the system that was missing from day one.
