What a Jobe Megaflow Float Valve Actually Does — and Why It's Built That Way

Jobe Megaflow valve isn't just a bigger version of a standard float valve. Its design solves a specific set of problems that show up on farms and ranches: livestock damaging exposed fittings, valves freezing in winter, and small valves that can't refill a heavily-used trough fast enough. Understanding how the valve actually works makes it much easier to pick the right one and install it correctly.
How the Valve Works
The Megaflow is a pilot-operated diaphragm valve, not a simple direct-acting float valve. A float rides on the water surface and connects to the valve body with a nylon cord. As the water level drops, the cord pulls open a small pilot valve. That pilot valve then triggers the main diaphragm valve, which opens fully and lets water flow into the tank. As the tank refills and the float rises, the cord slackens, the pilot valve closes, and the diaphragm shuts off flow — cleanly and without the slow trickle-and-drip you get from a worn washer-style valve.
This two-stage design is what lets the Megaflow move a lot of water — ratings range from roughly 50 GPM up to around 90 GPM depending on the model — through a valve that's still compact and simple.
Why It's Underwater-Mounted Only
This is the detail that gets missed most often: Megaflow valves are designed for underwater mounting only. They are not a drop-in replacement for a side-mounted or top-mounted float valve. That's a deliberate design choice, not a limitation:

Freeze protection. Submerging the working parts below the water surface keeps them insulated from air temperature swings, which helps the valve keep operating through cold snaps that would freeze an exposed valve solid.

Livestock protection. Cattle, horses, and other stock will rub, chew, and bump anything sticking up out of a trough. Keeping the mechanism underwater keeps it out of reach.

Cleaner installation. With no valve body above the waterline, there's nothing external to knock loose or damage during routine trough cleaning.
If your installation genuinely needs a side-mounted or above-water float valve, Megaflow isn't the right product line — that's a different valve family entirely, not a Megaflow configuration option.
Sizing: Match the Valve to Your Supply Line, Not Your Ambitions
The single biggest mistake in selecting a Megaflow is assuming a bigger inlet automatically means more water. It doesn't. The valve can only pass what your supply plumbing can deliver. If you're running 3/4" pipe, a 1" or 1-1/4" Megaflow won't outperform a 3/4" one — the smaller pipe is still the bottleneck. Inlet size should match the supply line, and available pressure (Megaflow valves are typically rated across a wide 5–150 PSI range) needs to be enough to open the diaphragm fully and sustain flow during peak drinking demand.
The real question to ask isn't "how big a valve can I install," it's "how much water actually leaves this trough during the worst part of the day, and can my supply line keep up." Oversizing the valve doesn't fix an undersized pipe, a restricted filter, or a weak pump.
Short Tail vs. Long Tail
Megaflow valves come in short-tail and long-tail versions across ¾", 1", and 1-1/4" inlet sizes, and the difference is simply how much threaded length is available to connect to your plumbing:

Long tail includes more thread, plus a backing nut and seal washer, giving more flexibility for tank wall thickness.

Short tail is more compact for tight installations but does not include the backing nut and washer.
Pick based on your tank wall thickness and how much clearance you have behind the mounting point — not on flow rate, since that's determined by inlet size, not tail length.
Built for Easy Field Service
A quarter-turn removes the valve from its base, so cleaning sediment, algae, or debris out of the mechanism doesn't require disconnecting plumbing or draining the whole tank. - A valve that can be pulled and cleaned quickly without tools or disassembly
- Corrosion resistance for outdoor, agricultural water conditions
