Choosing the Right Livestock Trough Valve: Flow, Mounting, and Serviceability
A dry trough slows down a whole operation. So does a valve that can't keep up when several head drink at once, sticks open and wastes water, or means a daily trip to the pasture just to check the level. The right
trough valve keeps water at the level you set without turning routine maintenance into a repair job.
For most farms and ranches, picking the right valve comes down to matching four things to your actual system: flow capacity, supply pressure, mounting location, and serviceability. Jobe's float valve lineup is built around exactly that logic — four product lines, each engineered for a different combination of flow rate and mounting need, rather than one generic valve in different sizes.
How a Float Valve Actually Works
Every Jobe float valve in this lineup uses the same core mechanism: a float rides the water surface and operates a small pilot valve. As the level drops, the pilot valve opens and triggers the main diaphragm valve, which lets water flow. As the float rises back to the set level, the pilot closes and the diaphragm shuts off. This pilot-and-diaphragm design (rather than a float arm acting directly on a large valve) is what allows these valves to pass high flow rates through a relatively compact, low-torque mechanism — and it's also what gives them a clean, positive shutoff instead of a slow drip.
Match Flow Rate to Real Peak Demand — Not Herd Size
Flow rate is usually rated in gallons per minute (GPM) at a specified pressure, and it's the first practical filter for choosing a valve line. But the number on the spec sheet only tells you what the valve can pass — actual fill rate at the trough also depends on pipe size, run length, elevation, fittings, and what your source can actually deliver.

Rojo — a low-flow line rated up to roughly 4–5 GPM, with ½" to ¾" inlets. It's designed for smaller tanks, cisterns, or pastures with modest, steady demand, where a large valve would be overkill. Rojo bodies screw apart by hand for service, and flow stops automatically once the body is unscrewed — no tools, no water hammer risk during maintenance.

Topaz — the most versatile line, rated up to about 80 GPM with ¾" to 1-1/4" inlets. Topaz mounts above or below the waterline and side, top, or bottom, which makes it the right call when the tank layout doesn't fit a fixed mounting style. It also comes in Differential, Partfill, Compact, and Industro variants for applications that need a specific fill behavior rather than simple full-on/full-off control.

Megaflow — rated up to roughly 90 GPM with the same ¾" to 1-1/4" inlet range as Topaz, but configured for underwater mounting only. That's a deliberate tradeoff: submerging the mechanism protects it from freezing and from livestock damage, at the cost of losing the above-water mounting flexibility Topaz offers.

Vortex — the highest-capacity line, rated up to roughly 600 L/min (about 159 GPM) with 1-1/4" to 2" inlets, built for cisterns, cooling towers, and commercial or industrial storage tanks rather than a standard stock tank. Vortex mounts above the waterline, and its main valve body threads securely into the arm rather than using the quarter-turn detach found on Topaz and Megaflow — a trade that favors extra strength for continuous industrial duty over the fastest possible service access.
Don't size a valve off headcount alone. Estimate how many animals are likely to drink during the busiest hour, how many gallons the trough holds, and how fast your well, pump, or pressure system can actually refill it. No valve can deliver water your source can't supply.
Match the Inlet to Your Supply Line
Inlet size needs to match your supply plumbing, not just the tank's demand. A 1" valve fed by ¾" pipe performs like a ¾" valve — the smaller pipe is still the bottleneck. Before replacing a slow-filling valve, check the existing line size, look for a clogged filter or restrictive fitting, and confirm supply pressure during a normal pump cycle rather than a single static reading. A larger or higher-capacity valve will not fix an upstream supply problem.
Choose Mounting Based on the Tank, Not Habit
Mounting style has real performance consequences, and Jobe's lineup maps cleanly onto the options:

Side-wall, above-water mounting (Topaz) keeps the float accessible for adjustment and works well when there's protected interior room for the float to travel freely.

Serviceability Is Part of the Decision, Not an Afterthought
A trough valve works in a wet, dirty environment, so seals, diaphragms, and floats will eventually need attention — that's normal wear, not a reason to replace the whole valve. Jobe's serviceable design carries across the lineup: Rojo bodies unscrew by hand, while Topaz and Megaflow use a quarter-turn detach base that lets you pull the valve for cleaning without shutting off the main supply or draining the tank. When to Step Up in Capacity
There's a real point where a low-flow valve becomes false economy — when a trough serves a large group, refills too slowly after peak drinking periods, or feeds multiple connected tanks. But higher capacity isn't automatically better: faster flow can agitate a small tank, outrun what your supply line can actually deliver, and make an improperly set float more likely to overflow.
