Jobe Vortex Valve for High-Flow Water Control
The Vortex exists for one reason: some tanks need water faster than a standard valve can deliver it. Cisterns, cooling towers, high-demand irrigation reservoirs, industrial storage — anywhere refill speed is the bottleneck, not tank size.
What Actually Makes It "High Flow"
Like Jobe's other lines, Vortex uses a pilot-operated diaphragm — the float triggers a small pilot valve, which opens the main diaphragm — rather than a float arm acting directly on the water passage. That two-stage design is what lets a compact valve body move up to 150 GPM (600 L/min) through 1.25"–2" inlets without needing to scale up the whole mechanism. The tradeoff for that flow capacity is a slower, controlled shutoff: Vortex closes gradually rather than snapping shut, which is a deliberate feature — a fast shutoff at that flow rate would produce serious water hammer in your pipes.
Four Configurations, Four Different Jobs — Pick by Function, Not Flow Rate Alone
- Standard Vortex — above-water mounted, full-flow, the default for most large tanks and reservoirs.
- Vortex Differential — built for pump-fed systems. It keeps a wide gap between "on" and "off" levels specifically to stop short-cycling, which is one of the more common causes of premature pump failure.
- Vortex Partfill — for rainwater harvesting. It maintains a low backup level during dry spells rather than keeping the tank topped off, so you don't lose capacity for the next rainfall.
- Vortex Bottom Fill — underwater-mounted, anti-siphon, for tanks where a top-mounted valve isn't practical or would be exposed to damage.
Sizing Mistake to Avoid
Matching inlet size to tank volume instead of to your actual supply line. A 2" Vortex fed by 1" pipe performs exactly like a 1" valve — your smaller pipe is still the ceiling on flow, regardless of what the valve is rated for. Measure your actual supply line and pressure before choosing inlet size, not your tank's total capacity.
Field Serviceability
The valve body threads off the tail for diaphragm and filter access — not the quarter-turn Detach system Topaz and Megaflow use, but still no special tools required. A Vortex service kit covers the parts that see the most wear. A built-in Frostpro port lets you add freeze protection without extra fittings, and a manual lock-off switch shuts the valve down for service without touching the main supply.
When Vortex Is Overkill
If your tank drains slowly and refills between uses without issue, a Topaz or Megaflow at a fraction of the price will do the job — Vortex earns its cost specifically when refill speed is the constraint, not just because the tank is large.
